Android Nougat market share reaches 11.5 percent but fragmentation issue continues to exist

Android Nougat finally hits the double digit mark in terms of market share. The operating system is now being used by 11.5 percent of active Android smartphone users. Android Nougat fell short of hitting the 10 percent market share last month.

According to the updated data on Android Dashboard, Android 7.0 Nougat is currently used by 10.9 percent active users while Android 7.1 Nougat is running on 0.9 percent of active devices. Android 6.0 Marshmallow continues to lead with a market share of 31.8 percent while Android Lollipop's market share has declined a bit from 30.8 percent to 30.1 percent. The updated numbers are based on data collected during a 7-day period ending on July 6, 2017.

The updated Android Dashboard reveals that Nougat gained 2 percent market share in the past month alone. The latest version of Android has been steadily growing for the past few months and was powering 9.5 percent active devices at the end of June 5, 2017. The growth is primarily driven by the launch of newer devices and rollout of Nougat update for existing smartphones. Android N is expected to hit millions of Xiaomi smartphones later this year and will help increase its adoption.

The data further shows that Android KitKat has dropped to 17.1 percent market share from 18.1 percent share last month. Various versions of Jelly Bean are still powering 8.1 percent active devices, down from 8.8 percent active devices last month. Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread each are still powering 0.7 percent of active devices. Google recently made Android O official in the form of developer preview and public beta at I/O 2017. The new mobile operating system is expected to become available in the coming months but it is yet to fix the growing fragmentation problem. Apple CEO Tim Cook Cook mocked Android's user base saying that "other platforms suffer from horrible fragmentation scenario" at WWDC 2017.
